Honoring C-Section Awareness Month: Holding Space for Birth Trauma and Healing

April is C-Section Awareness Month. This a time to shed light on an often overlooked experience in the birth world. Every birth story matters, including those that unfold in unexpected or surgical ways.

Whether your c-section was planned, unplanned, or an emergency, the emotional impact can run deep.

C-Section Birthe

Cesarean births account for about one in three deliveries in the U.S., yet many people report feeling unprepared, unheard, or dismissed after experiencing one. While some birthing people feel empowered by their C-section experience, others are left navigating waves of grief, disappointment, fear, or even trauma.

Personal Story

As a mom who experienced an unplanned c-section after a long labor, I know how complicated the emotions can be to process as you move through postpartum.

Before going into labor, I wasn’t worried about a c-section. In fact, I didn’t really think it was a possibility for me. I had a healthy pregnancy, I was strong, and I felt prepared for birth. As the hours of labor lengthened and my baby demonstrated signs of distress, the recommendation for a c-section was made.

A C-section is not just a clinical event—it’s a deeply personal, embodied experience that can affect your sense of safety, control, identity, and connection.

A Trauma-Informed Lens on Birth

At Alanna Betts Art Therapy and Counseling, we approach perinatal mental health through a trauma-informed lens. This means we understand that trauma can come from moments where you felt unsafe, powerless, or overwhelmed—experiences that can occur during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum.
